Why the Ascension Matters

This article was written by Pastor Ted Carnahan for the Jackson County Pilot this week. Ascension Day is celebrated 40 days after Easter. This year it will be on Thursday, May 29, but we will observe the day on the weekend of May 31-June 1.

Ascension Day is a often-overlooked festival of the church that we celebrate this Thursday. It marks the moment Jesus, after His resurrection, ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9-11). Far from a mere departure, it’s a powerful affirmation that Christ now reigns at God’s right hand, ruling over all creation with love and authority.

What does this mean for you? In a world filled with uncertainty—whether it’s personal struggles, global crises, or daily stresses—Ascension Day reminds us that we’re not alone. Jesus isn’t distant or unconcerned with us; He intercedes for us, guiding and protecting His people. His ascension assures us that no challenge is beyond His power. We can find comfort in knowing that our Savior, who walked among us, now reigns supreme, offering hope that transcends our circumstances.

Christ’s ascension also empowers us to live with purpose. He sends His Holy Spirit to equip us for lives of love and service. We'll especially celebrate that on Pentecost on June 8. We should reflect on how we can share His compassion in this community, trusting that He works through us to bring light to a hurting world.

Are we trusting in Christ’s authority over our lives? Are we seeking His guidance in our decisions? This is a perfect time to reconnect with our Lord Jesus Christ. I encourage you to engage with fellow Christians to celebrate and explore what Christ’s reign means for you. Whether you’re a lifelong believer or just curious, there’s a place for you to experience the peace and purpose found in faith.
